There are over 130,000 Gas Safe registered engineers in the UK. Most of them manage their business with a mix of WhatsApp, a spreadsheet, and whatever cert app someone at the wholesaler recommended.
That works when you're on your own. It stops working the moment you take on a second engineer, start chasing 20 invoices a month, or get asked for your RAMS by a letting agent.
This guide reviews every serious option for gas engineers in 2026 — from cert-only apps to full job management platforms. We've compared features, tested the interfaces, and worked out the real cost at every team size.
How we tested
We signed up, used each platform, and compared them across 12 criteria that matter to gas engineers: CP12 generation, Gas Safe tracking, scheduling, quoting, invoicing, GPS, mobile app, compliance, AI features, integrations, and price. No affiliate links. We include ourselves in the comparison because we think we win on merit.
What gas engineers actually need from software
Before we get into the reviews, here's the functionality that separates a proper gas engineer platform from a generic tool someone ported from the US market:
- CP12 / Gas Safety Record generation — pre-filled from job data, not blank templates
- Gas Safe registration tracking — expiry alerts for you and your team
- ACS category tracking — CCN1, CENWAT, CKR1, HTR1, etc. per engineer
- Landlord gas safety reminders — auto-chase annual renewals
- Boiler fault logging — record fault codes, parts used, warranty status
- RAMS generation — commercial sites require these before access
- Scheduling with travel time — not just a calendar, actual route awareness
- Invoicing with payment links — stop chasing bank transfers
- Xero / QuickBooks integration — your accountant will thank you
If a platform doesn't cover at least the first four, it's not built for gas engineers. It's a general tool with a gas page on the website.
The 8 platforms reviewed
| Platforms tested | Criteria compared | Monthly price range | Gas Safe engineers UK | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Total | 8 | 12 | £10–£400 | 130,000+ |
1. Gas Engineer Software
The incumbent. Over 6,000 UK users, built specifically for gas engineers. If you've been in the trade more than a year, someone has mentioned it to you.
What it does well: CP12 certificates, gas safety records, LGSR reminders, boiler fault code library, basic scheduling. The certificate generation is solid — it's what built the company.
What it doesn't do: AI, GPS fleet tracking, RAMS, call recording, customer portal, subcontractor management, bid writing, compliance dashboards. It's a cert app with scheduling bolted on.
Pros
- Built specifically for gas engineers — understands the trade
- Good CP12 and LGSR generation
- Boiler fault code database
- 6,000+ users — proven in the field
- Affordable for solo engineers (from £15/mo)
Cons
- No AI features at all
- No GPS fleet tracking
- No RAMS or compliance management
- No customer portal
- No call recording or AI receptionist
- Limited reporting and analytics
- Invoicing is basic — no payment links or auto-chasing
Price: From £15/mo (solo) to £30/user/mo (teams). 5 engineers = £150/mo.
Best for: Solo gas engineers who only need certificates and basic scheduling. If that's you and you don't plan to grow, it's fine.
The problem: The moment you need proper invoicing, compliance tracking, or fleet management, you're bolting on 2–3 other tools. That's when the "cheap" option stops being cheap.
2. Commusoft
Enterprise-grade field service software. Popular with large plumbing and heating firms. Very capable — and very expensive.
What it does well: Full job lifecycle management, parts tracking, automated communications, detailed reporting, fleet management. If you're running 20+ engineers, Commusoft can handle the complexity.
What it doesn't do: Show you the price on their website. You have to book a sales call. When you do, expect £60–80 per user per month.
Pros
- Comprehensive job management
- Strong parts inventory system
- Good for large teams (20+)
- Automated customer communications
- UK-based with UK support
Cons
- Pricing hidden behind sales calls — bad sign
- Around £80/user/mo makes 5 users = £400/mo
- No AI receptionist or AI bid writing
- Overkill for teams under 10
- Long onboarding process
- No Gas Safe-specific cert generation
Price: Around £60–80/user/mo (estimated — they won't publish it). 5 engineers = roughly £400/mo.
Best for: Large plumbing/heating firms (15+ engineers) who need enterprise features and have budget to match.
3. Tradify
New Zealand-born, UK-adapted. Owned by The Access Group since 2022. Clean interface, solid mobile app. The biggest marketing machine in the space — 652 blog posts, 76 trade pages.
What it does well: Quoting, scheduling, invoicing. The core workflow is polished. Mobile app is fast. Good Xero integration.
What it doesn't do: Gas Safe certificate generation, ACS tracking, RAMS, GPS fleet tracking, AI anything, call recording, compliance tracking, customer portal. It's a general trades tool that happens to have a gas engineer page on the website.
Pros
- Clean, modern interface
- Fast mobile app
- Good Xero/QuickBooks sync
- Strong quoting workflow
Cons
- No gas safety certificate generation
- No Gas Safe or ACS tracking
- No AI features
- No GPS fleet tracking
- No RAMS or compliance suite
- Per-user pricing: £37/user = £185/mo for 5 engineers
- Owned by Access Group — expect price increases
Price: £37/user/mo. 5 engineers = £185/mo.
Best for: Trades businesses that need clean quoting and invoicing and nothing else. Not built for gas engineers specifically.
4. Powered Now
UK company, strong on certificates. The closest competitor to Gas Engineer Software in the cert space, but with broader job management features.
What it does well: Gas safety certificates, EICRs, invoice generation, basic scheduling. Has a domestic focus that suits sole traders and small teams.
What it doesn't do: AI, GPS fleet tracking, call recording, AI receptionist, RAMS generation, bid writing, tender watching. The certificate workflow is good; everything else is basic.
Pros
- Good certificate generation (CP12, EICR, etc.)
- Invoicing with card payments
- UK-focused
- Reasonable pricing for solo traders
Cons
- No AI features
- No GPS fleet tracking
- No RAMS or compliance dashboards
- No call recording
- No bid writing or tender watching
- Mobile app reviews are mixed
- Per-user: £32/user = £160/mo for 5
Price: £32/user/mo. 5 engineers = £160/mo.
Best for: Solo gas engineers or duos who want certificates and invoicing in one tool.
5. Workever
UK-based, positions itself as affordable field service management. Has 39 industry pages on their website which makes them look comprehensive. The product is less so.
What it does well: Basic scheduling, job tracking, invoicing. Clean enough interface. Affordable entry point.
What it doesn't do: Gas safety certificates, ACS tracking, RAMS, GPS fleet tracking (real-time), AI, call recording, compliance dashboards, customer portal. The 39 industry pages are marketing. The product is the same generic tool for every trade.
Pros
- Affordable entry price
- Clean interface
- Basic job management works
Cons
- No gas safety certificates
- No compliance tracking
- No AI features
- No GPS fleet tracking
- Very basic reporting
- You'll outgrow it within 6 months
Price: £39/user/mo. 5 engineers = £195/mo.
Best for: Businesses that need the absolute basics and plan to switch later. (Most do.)
6. BigChange
Comprehensive platform acquired by simPRO in 2024. Strong on fleet tracking and compliance. Enterprise-priced.
Pros
- Excellent GPS fleet tracking
- Strong compliance features
- Workshop scheduling
- Vehicle check integration
Cons
- £79.95/licence/mo — 5 users = £400/mo
- Complex setup, long onboarding
- Now owned by simPRO — future uncertain
- No AI receptionist or bid writing
- No gas-specific cert generation
Price: £79.95/licence/mo. 5 engineers = £400/mo.
Best for: Large field service operations (15+ vans) with budget for enterprise software.
7. ServiceM8
Australian platform, popular for sole traders. Job count-based pricing is unusual — you pay per number of active jobs, not per user.
Pros
- No per-user pricing — unusual and potentially cheaper for large teams
- Good form builder for custom certificates
- Decent mobile app
Cons
- No UK-specific compliance (Gas Safe, ACS)
- No GPS fleet tracking
- No AI features
- Job count limits on cheaper plans
- Australian-built — UK trades aren't the priority
- Limited scheduling for multi-engineer teams
Price: From £29/mo (solo) to £349/mo (premium). Not per-user but job-count limited.
Best for: Solo trades who like the flat-rate model and don't need UK compliance features.
8. Muster
Full disclosure: this is us. We built Muster because we saw gas engineers paying for 3–4 separate tools and still not having compliance tracking or AI. We'll let the feature comparison speak for itself.
What it does: Everything above — CP12 generation from job data, Gas Safe and ACS tracking with expiry alerts, RAMS, GPS fleet tracking, AI receptionist, AI bid writing, call recording, customer portal, Xero/QuickBooks sync, subcontractor management, vehicle compliance (MOT/insurance auto-pulled from DVLA), and automated invoice chasing with payment links via Muster Pay.
What it doesn't do: We don't have a boiler fault code database (yet — it's on the roadmap). And we're newer than Gas Engineer Software, so we have fewer users to date.
Pros
- CP12 and gas safety records from job data
- Gas Safe + ACS category tracking per engineer
- AI receptionist answers calls 24/7
- GPS fleet tracking with live ETAs
- RAMS generation with AI
- Customer portal with online payments (Muster Pay)
- AI bid writing for tenders
- Flat-rate pricing — doesn't penalise growth
Cons
- Newer platform — fewer users than Gas Engineer Software
- No boiler fault code database yet
- AI features use credits (1,000 included on Starter)
Price: Starter £179/mo flat (3 office + 6 field). Growth £349/mo. Scale £599/mo. Not per-user.
Feature comparison: Muster vs Gas Engineer Software
| Feature | Muster | Gas Eng. Software |
|---|---|---|
| CP12 / Gas Safety Records | Yes | Yes |
| Gas Safe expiry tracking | Yes | Yes |
| ACS category tracking | Yes | Yes |
| Landlord LGSR reminders | Yes | Yes |
| RAMS generation | Yes | No |
| AI receptionist (24/7 calls) | Yes | No |
| GPS fleet tracking | Yes | No |
| Customer portal | Yes | No |
| AI bid writing | Yes | No |
| Call recording | Yes | No |
| Vehicle compliance (MOT/DVLA) | Yes | No |

| Score | 14/14 | 4/14 |
Pricing comparison: real cost for a 5-engineer team
This is where the numbers speak. Per-user pricing punishes growth. Here's what each platform actually costs for a team of 5:
| Platform | 5 engineers | Pricing model |
|---|---|---|
| Gas Engineer Software | £150/mo | £30/user |
| Powered Now | £160/mo | £32/user |
| Muster Starter | £179/mo | Flat rate |
| Tradify | £185/mo | £37/user |
| Workever | £195/mo | £39/user |
| BigChange | £400/mo | £80/licence |
| Commusoft | ~£400/mo | ~£80/user |
At 5 engineers, Muster costs £29/mo more than Gas Engineer Software — but includes AI, GPS, RAMS, compliance, customer portal, call recording, bid writing, and invoice chasing. Gas Engineer Software gives you certificates and basic scheduling. That £29 buys you 14 extra capabilities.
Now look at what happens when you grow to 10 engineers:
| Platform | 10 engineers | Pricing model |
|---|---|---|
| Gas Engineer Software | £300/mo | £30/user |
| Powered Now | £320/mo | £32/user |
| Muster Growth | £349/mo | Flat rate |
| Tradify | £370/mo | £37/user |
| Workever | £390/mo | £39/user |
| BigChange | £800/mo | £80/licence |
| Commusoft | ~£800/mo | ~£80/user |
At 10 engineers, Muster is cheaper than everyone except Gas Engineer Software — which still doesn't have GPS, AI, RAMS, or a customer portal. Per-user pricing is a tax on growth.
Our recommendation
For most UK gas engineers, Muster is the best option in 2026
If you need certificates AND job management AND compliance AND don't want to pay per user, Muster gives you the most for your money. The only reason to choose Gas Engineer Software over Muster is if you are a solo engineer who only needs certs and nothing else.
If budget is the only factor: Gas Engineer Software at £15/mo for a solo engineer is the cheapest cert-capable option.
If you're a large firm (15+ engineers): Look at Commusoft or BigChange if you need enterprise-level parts inventory or complex workflow automation. But check Muster's Scale plan (£599/mo flat) first — it may do everything you need at half the price.
If you just need generic quoting and invoicing: Tradify or ServiceM8 will work, but they don't understand gas engineering. You'll be building workarounds for certificates and compliance from day one.
Frequently asked questions
Can I migrate my data from Gas Engineer Software to Muster?
Yes. Our onboarding team handles the migration — customer records, job history, and certificate data. Most migrations complete in under a week. No charge for migration.
Does Muster generate CP12 certificates that comply with Gas Safety Regulations 1998?
Yes. CP12 / Landlord Gas Safety Records are generated from your job data and follow the format required by the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. All required fields included: appliance details, flue checks, safety readings, and engineer Gas Safe registration.
Can I track different ACS categories for different engineers?
Yes. Each engineer profile includes their Gas Safe registration, ACS categories (CCN1, CENWAT, CKR1, HTR1, MET1, etc.), and expiry dates. Muster alerts you 90, 60, and 30 days before any registration expires.
What happens if I go over the user limit on Muster Starter?
Starter includes 3 office users and 6 field workers. If you need more, upgrade to Growth (£349/mo) which includes 5 office and 15 field — or Scale (£599/mo) for unlimited users.
